- Lester Chang was born on the Lower East Side in public housing to immigrant Chinese parents, who were determined to provide a better life for their three children. When Lester was 8 years old, his father who worked as a cook in a Chinese restaurant, lost his battle with cancer and the family briefly returned to Hong Kong to live with relatives. A few years later, his family returned to New York City and settled in Midwood, Brooklyn.
- A product of New York’s public education system, Lester has graduated from Midwood High School and holds a BS degree in accounting from Brooklyn College (CUNY) and a Masters Degree in International Transportation from (SUNY) State University of New York Maritime College in the Bronx. Lester previously worked in banking and finance before choosing a caree in global logistics which enabled him to travel extensively in Asia. Over the course of his logistics caree, he has served in various senior management positions in managing company offices in India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietname and Thailand.
- After stints at Bank of America, and at a local Chinatown stock brokerage house, he focused on the shipping industry, where he soon moved up to management at Wen-Parker Logistics, then Seagate Logistics. The industry afforded him the opportunity to travel the world, working in India, overseeing operations in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong and China.
- In addition to his private sector caree, Lester have retired as a navy reservist for nearly 24 years. In the aftermath of 9/11 he was assigned to support Homeland Security in Washington, D.C. In 2009-2010, he was deployed to Bagram Air base, Afghanistan as a military analyst. He last rank is Chief Warrant Office (CWO3).
- He is a current member of the New York State Naval Militia. He volunteers for State active duty in support of Operation COVID-19, since March 2020, he helped converted Jacob Javits Convention Center into a field hospital (treated over 1,000 covid patients), and Javits Center transition to a vaccination center serving over 500,00 patients.
- Lester is a native New York and currently reside in Brooklyn. He is an executive committee member with his local Chinatown American Legion Post 1291 (400+ members). As an Afghan War Veteran, he is uniquely qualified to represent and understand Combat war veteran issues.
